Chronic pancreatitis is the progressive destruction of pancreatic tissue. This leads to an increase in the connective tissue with fibrosis (increase in connective tissue cells) and scarring. As the disease progresses, exocrine and endocrine functional weaknesses appear.

Anatomy of the pancreas & description of the endocrine & exocrine function:

Our pancreas consists of a head, a body and a tail.

The main task of the head area is to form enzymes for the utilization of our food and thus nutrients (= exocrine function). These are then released into the small intestine to break down carbohydrates, proteins and fats from our foods.

The main task of the tail area of the pancreas is to produce hormones for the metabolism of carbohydrates - insulin and  Glucagon (= endocrine function).

Causes:

  • chronic alcohol abuse (alcohol abuse)

  • chronic biliary tract disease

  • idiopathic (unexplained causes)

  • chronic pancreatitis

Symptoms:

  • pains

  • Bloating

  • nausea

  • Vomit

  • Intolerance symptoms

  • Constipation & or diarrhea

  • due to the progressive inflammatory process:

  • exocrine and endocrine pancreatic insufficiency

Consequences of exocrine disorder:

  • Steatorrhea

  • Diarrhea

  • Disturbances in protein digestion and absorption

  • Consequences of the endocrine disorder:

  • diabetic metabolism

Therapy:

  • Abstinence from alcohol

  • medical therapy

  • dietary therapy
