Epilepsy is a sudden discharge disorder of groups of neurons in the brain that leads to seizures with specific behavior, well-being and movement disorders.
Why is nutritional therapy important?
Nutritional therapy helps you delay relapses and make medication respond better. The aim is to supply all of the fatty acids, micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) that are important to you, energy and protein in the measure that your body is optimally supplied with. For this purpose, foods that promote inflammation are specifically avoided and plenty of anti-inflammatory foods are consumed. Weight reduction is recommended if you are overweight / obese. An anti-inflammatory diet can improve the state of health.
Indication of the ketogenic diet
The therapy is useful for patients who hardly respond to medication and who are out of the question for a surgical procedure. Especially in the case of forms of epilepsy that occur in infancy or toddlerhood, the strict diet is worth considering (in the case of West syndrome, Dravet syndrome or Doose syndrome).
Do not use in the case of: Genetic disorders of fat utilization or defects in the formation of new glucose.
Prerequisites for the implementation for a therapeutic success:
The diet must be followed strictly and over a long period of time. This requires a high level of acceptance and intensive cooperation from all those involved (parents and those affected). The patient or the parents must be informed in advance about the implementation and important information on the success, the benefits and possible side effects. The diet follows very strict criteria and the specified nutrient ratios must be adhered to at every meal if possible. Therefore, this form of therapy should only be carried out in the company of a certified nutritionist who is experienced in this field. Patients should never start such an epilepsy diet on their own and without professional advice.

It is advisable to have your Omega 3 index checked regularly. This provides information about the supply of valuable omega 3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid), which can significantly counteract inflammatory processes in the body.
